The Society was founded in 1965 in Otley, the home town of Thomas Chippendale. Its principal aims are:

to advance the public education and to promote the appreciation and study of the work of Thomas Chippendale senior and junior
to acquire, preserve and maintain examples of their work for the benefit of the nation
to promote public understanding of the design, production and use of furniture and other decorative arts in the Georgian era

Thomas Chippendale was born in Otley, Yorkshire where the townspeople have long cherished their connection with the ‘Shakespeare of English furniture’.  Each year, a dinner is held to celebrate the anniversary of Chippendale’s baptism on 5 June 1718.  Other events, including lectures, study days and visits to places of interest are organised during the year.  There are generally three newsletters each year which enable members to keep in touch with The Society’s activities and news.
