A Chippendale Library Table..

One of the joys of looking at and studying Chippendale furniture is that occasionally a piece is discovered that relates directly to the published ‘Director’ design. This Library Table, currently being offered for sale by Alexander George Antiques is such an example.

Based on plate No. LXXXI and taking its inspiration from the left hand side of the design, this desk clearly shows how craftsmen could take Chippendale’s designs and recreate them whilst adding their own variations or interpretations.

In this case, the craftsman or customer has chosen to add to the design with various drawers to the frieze, one particular drawer being for the storage of pens. But yet the familiar design and outline of the desk can still easily be recognised from Chippendales design.

It is also worth noting that the desk retains its original handles and escutcheons.
